The domed monument was constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1654 for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It has their tombs and a mosque, as well as many other graves of the Mogul royalty. The site receives about 3 million visitors every year.
To cut down on pollution, cars and buses are not allowed to go towards the Taj Mahal but must be parked about 2 km away, where visitors can take battery-powered buses or horse-drawn carriages.
